The Seveso III Directive and its impact on Risk Communication and Emergencies

The coming entry into force of European Directive Seveso III, 2012/18/UE, regarding the control of risks associated to major accidents increases the number of Spanish affected companies which will need to report the risks they may pose to the population with the collaboration of the authorities.

Seveso III specifies that the interested audience must have the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process in environmental affairs. That is, it allows citizens to be part of the decisions regarding industrial activities and their impact on health and environment at an early stage and while all options remain on the table.

Therefore, this article written with the collaboration of Luis Serrano Rodríguez, Press Officer of the Emergency Service 112 Madrid, analyses how affected corporations will have to review and update their communication strategy to face the risks associated to their activity and manage emergency situations.
