THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: UNION’S CO-OWNER LEGISLATIVE SYSTEM

From May 22 to May 25, voters of the 28 UE Member States will elect the 751 representatives who will compose the 8th Legislature of the European Parliament for the 2014-2019 period.

In order to strengthen the democratic legitimacy of the EU, the subsequent reforms of the Treaties have increased the powers of the European Parliament, with a significant enhancement in the last agreement: the Treaty of Lisbon.

This power increase translates into more responsibilities for the 751 members of Parliament as regards decisions that affect us: citizens and corporations.

Therefore, this report describes the European electoral process and offers the keys to these elections, electoral systems and number of members to appoint, broken down by countries.
