The role of multilateral organizations in the economic and social development of Latin America

The beginning of international cooperation stemmed from the Cold War. The emergence of a bipolar world is essential to understanding the origin of cooperation, envisaged as an instrument to ensure their respective areas of influence. Thus, the Marshall Plan, apart from being an instrument of the United States to maintain its influence, became the main reference for cooperation.

A historical perspective is useful to understand the motivations that boost cooperation as well as the level of complexity acquired. From then until now, mankind has witnessed the process of evolution that the very concept of development has experienced. An increasingly complex reality has shown the impossibility of applying recipes mechanically and universally.

Therefore, the following report by Developing Ideas supports that the adoption of a multidimensional and flexible concept of development – which analyzes, in each case, what are the main structural gaps–, is the only guarantee to achieve a real contribution from international cooperation.
